NPS is the source of truth for status, fees, and rules on Pīpīwai Trail. AllTrails, Wikipedia, and Reddit appear as labeled comparison or review themes. Review frequencies are not invented. NPS Haleakalā alerts are rechecked immediately before publish. Corrections go to hello@pipiwaitrailmaui.com.
| Source | Allowed use on this site |
|---|---|
| NPS Haleakalā | Status, fees, rules, trail table, district facts |
| AllTrails, "Waimoku Falls via Pipiwai Trail" | Labeled length, grade, rating, quotes, AI-summary themes |
| Wikipedia Pīpīwai Trail | Labeled comparison (miles, names). Not status. |
| Visitor notes | Folded into planning judgment. Not a tally on visitor pages. |
Which facts get a source
Anything that can change carries a source and a date: whether the trail is open, entrance fees, group limits, pet rules, camping reservations, and the official distances. Those come from NPS.
Two things have to be true before you can hike this trail. The park has to be open and the road past Hāna has to be passable. They fail independently and get tracked separately, because a visitor who checks only the park page can still find the highway shut.
Which parts are our judgment
Timing advice, footing warnings, turnaround recommendations, and whether the drive is worth it from a given town are ours. They are written as advice, not attributed to anyone else, and you should weigh them accordingly.
Where a listing and NPS disagree, both figures stay on the page and then we recommend one. We do not average them and we do not pretend the gap is not there.
What these pages will not invent
No made-up review percentages. The AllTrails rating, the published quotes, and the forum reports are quoted as what they are, which is a listing and a handful of accounts rather than a survey.
Official figures are rechecked before publish and the check date is printed on every page. Currently 2026-08-16.
Corrections
If a page misquotes NPS, drops a label, or treats a Reddit snippet as a count, email hello@pipiwaitrailmaui.com. The cited surface will be checked and the fix dated.
